Beijing Auto Works , BAW , was founded in 1951 as China’s second large-scale automotive enterprise. In 1958, Commander Zhu De personally inscribed the company name, cementing its place in industrial history. Over 74 years, BAW has undergone three entrepreneurial eras, each one expanding its capability, reach, and vision.

Today, BAW is a fully integrated automotive technology company, designing, engineering, manufacturing, and servicing passenger cars, commercial vehicles, military vehicles, motorcycles, and new energy vehicles under one roof.

1951

First Startup: BAW is Founded

BAW is founded as Beijing Auto Works, the second large-scale automotive enterprise in new China. Its earliest mission: to build vehicles for a nation on the move.

1958

Commander Zhu De Inscribes the Name

Commander Zhu De personally inscribes the company name, cementing its place in China’s industrial history.

1966

The BJ212 is Born

A military off-road vehicle that becomes a national icon. Over 56 years, the BJ212 and its successors sell 2.4 million units, contributing directly to China’s national defense and economic construction.

1983

Second Startup: Reform & Expansion

BAW embraces reform and expands into international collaboration, growing its engineering and production capabilities across new vehicle categories.

2001

The 'Warrior' is Launched

The second-generation military off-road command vehicle , the ‘Warrior’ , is launched, reinforcing BAW’s role as a trusted partner of China’s defense sector.

2020

Third Startup: A New Headquarters

Chairman Lu Fujun registers Beijing Automobile Works (Qingdao) in Laixi City, relocating headquarters and launching BAW’s most ambitious chapter , full integration of new energy, commercial, and passenger vehicles at scale.

Three R&D Centers

BAW operates three dedicated R&D centers in Qingdao, Linyi, and Dezhou, with a combined investment of 4 billion yuan. They provide full vehicle test capability across performance, safety, and environmental standards.

BAW’s power systems are co-developed with Wuling Liuji and Korea’s BP Blue, Asia’s largest engine design company, through a joint facility capable of producing 200,000 hybrid power assemblies and 500,000 engines per year.

Since 1994, Chairman Lu Fujun has led BAW through transformation and rapid growth. In 2020, he assumed the mission of reviving the brand, establishing Beijing Automobile Works (Qingdao) with a clear mandate: to build BAW’s next chapter through innovation, new energy, and global expansion.

Under his leadership, BAW has grown to 20 billion yuan in assets, 8,000+ employees, and over 2,000 global sales and service points.
